Scripps Sunday #67
I have been continuing to chew on a quote that I think I shared with you a few weeks ago from the On Being podcast where Krista Tippet interviewed Barbara Brown Taylor:
"To be holy is to keep one's balance while the earth moves under our feet."
As I continued to meditate on this (as the earth seems to be moving under my feet quite a bit with things at SPU and with Taylor about to graduate and with Dad’s job search), I also read Psalm 100 in the Message that says, “On your feet now—applaud God! Bring a gift of laughter, sing yourselves into his presence.”
Upon reading this (do you see my monkey brain at work here?), I thought of the Taize song called “Come and Fill”:

This song reframed the Barbara Brown Taylor quote for me in a powerful way. "To be holy is to keep one's balance while the earth moves under our feet."
I had been thinking about trying to keep my balance during this time almost as if this were another thing to try to do well. But, singing myself into God’s presence with this Taize song brought me to the realization that God alone is holy. God alone can keep the balance. My job is to lean in and depend on God who will hold me tight as the earth is shifting under my feet. The pressure’s off- it’s not about my performance but about me leaning on God.
Anna, may you know that you are held by God who will hold you in balance while the earth may be shifting under your feet as you close the door to your second year of college (how in the world are you practically already half way done!?) and as you prepare to come home for the summer.
